Infectious Diseases Society of Singapore (EDSS) president Dr S Lim said the current government's policy on the use of medicines has been put in question by a government survey.
"Today, we are very concerned that the government of Singapore is going to do something to make it easier for people to buy drugs like Viagra or Cialis," she said.
SLim said the current health system in Singapore is "very complicated" and that it would require that patients are allowed to buy medicines on the Internet.
"This is a very important issue for the whole society," she said.
A survey of 18,000 Singaporeans by the EDSS website found that most of the respondents said they do not have any need to do so. Most of the survey respondents said they have bought the drugs for personal use.
However, two-thirds of the respondents said they did not have a problem with the way the government has decided to address the issue, the survey said.
S Lim said she was concerned about the recent increase in the use of medicines in Singapore. "We have heard the news that the medicine companies are changing their policies, and that is what has happened to us," she said.
She said that while there is a difference between the number of people who buy medicines online and those in Singapore, it would not be a surprise to see more people buying medicines on the Internet.
"There have been many other factors that have been identified that have affected the availability of medications that are available in Singapore," she said.
She said that there is also an increase in the availability of drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).
She said the government's decision to restrict the use of medicines in Singapore had been taken out of the blue because there was a lack of evidence that the use of medicines is medically necessary. "It is not a crime that someone uses medicine for personal use, it is a crime that someone has used it for personal gain."
S Lim said that the current government will need to address the issue of the availability of drugs to treat ED in Singapore. "The government is not going to be doing anything that will be considered in public discussion because it does not have any policy of public safety," she said.
"We need to think about the public safety issues that may affect the availability of drugs that are available in Singapore," she said.
